Backdoor

What Is a Backdoor?

A backdoor is a hidden mechanism in software — code, credential, or configuration — that allows unauthorized access or control while bypassing normal authentication and security controls, often inserted intentionally by an attacker who has compromised the development or build process.

Backdoors are particularly dangerous because they are designed to evade detection. They may live in firmware for years, hide inside compiled artifacts where source review cannot reach them, or wait dormant until triggered. The defense is independent verification of what is actually inside shipped software — the practice at the core of NetRise's approach.
