Extended IoT (xIoT)

What Is Extended IoT (xIoT)?

Extended IoT (xIoT) is an umbrella term for the broader category of connected devices beyond consumer IoT — including industrial IoT, medical IoT, operational technology, building automation, networking infrastructure, and other embedded systems — all of which run firmware that traditional security tools rarely inspect.

xIoT represents a massive expansion of the attack surface for most organizations. Each device runs software the security team did not write, often from vendors whose security practices are opaque. Vetting that software requires binary-level visibility — exactly what conventional AppSec and EDR tools were not designed for.
